User Experience

Context

Plain English

It is the wider situation around an action or decision that gives it meaning.

Definition

Context is the set of surrounding conditions that shape how someone behaves and decides, including their goal, their , their time pressure, and what happened immediately before. The same action can mean different things in different contexts.

In practice

Used to understand why something happens, not just what happens.

In context

It is what labs remove. A tool that tests beautifully in a quiet room is used one-handed, outdoors, under time pressure, by someone being interrupted.

The reality

If removed, becomes shallow.

Compared with

Context vs Environment

is the physical setting. Context includes it plus the user's goal, state of mind, time pressure and what happened just before. Two people in the same environment can be in entirely different contexts.

I had a fantastic experience working with Andy. One of his most impressive achievements during our time at NHS HEE was masterminding a deeply complex information architecture for a new platform that brought together a large number of legacy websites.
